Benefits of HTML 5 in SEO

On November 22, 2012 by techno

HTML is been around for quite some time, in fact it is where it all started back in the 1990’s, with the introduction of HTML 5  things just got a lot more interesting as developers could now use the simple markup language to add audio, video, graphics and much more to static pages and make them look neat and clean.

Here is a list of benefits of HTML5 for front end developers, to help them make better websites on this technology.

Benefits of HTML 5:

Search Engine Indexing:  HTML5 supports new code elements like, instead of using <div id=”header”>, as in standard HTML developers would now be using <header> in HTML5; this tells a search engine what their “function” is. Although Google, Bing Or Yahoo, have not yet come out and said so outright but it is not so hard to imagine that these new elements are added to make indexing and re-indexing

Improved Code & Markup: HTML 5 has removed most div tags and replaces them with semantic HTML 5 elements; this enables web designers to use cleaner, neater code, which search engines prefer.

Standardized Code & Semantic HTML 5 Elements: HTML 5 has a systematic and standardized coding feature, this helps in designing without clutter and also becomes easy for designers to understand and edit, also It is now possible to see a page in breakups, headers {H1,H2,H3…etc}, footer, etc, structured pages are search engine feed.

Session Storage & Local Storage: To give better load times HTML 5 uses Sessions Storage & Local Storage mechanism which is far better than using cookies. Cookies have been used for a long time now to store information about unique visitors; this has a major flaw as it adds all the cookie data to HTTP request increasing the load times, so a best practice is to reduce cookie size. With HTML5 we can do better by using Session Storage and local Storage, in place of cookies. It is not a permanent database, but enables you to store structured data, temporarily.

Supports Forms: HTML5 enables designer to use fancier forms. Even it makes form validation native to HTML, User interface enhancements and reduced need for JavaScript empowers developers to code without much need of other integration.

Geo Location Support: The new HTML5 Geo-location APIs identifies location, whether generated via GPS or other methods, directly available to any HTML5-compatible browser-based application, this enables users to find out where in the world are you sharing the information from, there have been other ways like your IP address, your wireless connection, cell phone tower, etc..Calculating longitude and latitude using satellites in the sky.

Offline Application Cache: HTML 5 allows developers to specify the parts of pages they would like to store as cache, while coding the website, a developer can specify all the files that he wants the browser to cache. So, even if you refresh the page when you are offline, the page will still load correctly. This sort of caching has several advantages like offline browsing; files load much faster and reduced load on server.

Better Accessibility: Different technologies can elaborate on the features provided in HTML5, this help in better accessibility and integration of other technologies with HTML5 code, designers can design better front end applications with problem free front ends, it also adds a host of other useful elements.

Visually Appealing: HTML5 has “Canvas”: a powerful tool for creating graphic content. With Canvas, it becomes easier to create animations, drawings and other complex visuals without using external apps.

This was just a overview of some of the features HTML 5 offers that are relevant to Search Optimization, there are a lot of other exiting features available…

Conclusion:

So after looking at all the benefits of HTML5, you might be thinking the next big thing is here and HTML5 is the new base for web designing, well that’s not entirely true, as the fact remains, search engines only rank webpage’s with user oriented content, if the page contains information which is use full and the code is beautiful ranking for a SERP is a good possibility.

For websites using Flash either on the homepage or for the entire website, switching to HTML 5, makes sense and they should definitely see a jump in traffic, this is because when Google and Bing think they need more metadata to make sense of the millions of pages they cache every day, I would say help them.

The only major drawback I see so far in using HTML 5, Inability to add dynamic content which is what helps you update your website easily, if you really had to make a choice to go in for HTML 5, I would suggest making the website pages static with HTML 5 and adding the blog on a sub domain with a blogging software installation like WordPress.com, this would help you get the best of both the technologies.

Online reputation management tips for small business owners

On November 13, 2012 by techno
When people look for information about businesses online, they tend to trust major search engines to pull up such niche information for them. search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing & AOL are some of the major sources of this information.
Hence looking good online by managing ones reputation on such information sources is of crucial importance these days.
Proactive online reputation management gives you the control over how your business looks and what people read about you online, this helps you safeguard and grow your business.
If you are new to ORM, here are some tips to get you started….

Tip 1 : Establish Presence on relevant social networks
When people search for your company online, they need to be furnished readily with all the relevant information that they are looking for, social presence should provide a snapshot of the products & services which your business provides.
Visitors from such sources can then be redirected to the relevant product or service page on your company website.

Tip 2 : Website should be socially integrated
Having a search friendly website is a crucial part of your online marketing efforts,
a search engine-optimized website, the most powerful tools for building an online reputation are social media and social networking websites.
Social networking profiles rank well and allow you to control what information reaches the public, safeguarding your privacy. Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn are three essential social networks for your business. From your social networking profiles, you can share information on new products, special offers and more.

Tip 3 : Monitor your online content
This is your first step in consciously monitoring the content (feedback, comments, reviews, articles, etc…) about your company, now you might be thinking that this is going to be one hell of a task “monitoring all the content about published your company online”, here is some good news for you, there are tools that let you do this for free :)
Google Alerts is one basic way to monitor new online content about your business. When you sign up for Google Alerts, you’ll receive an email whenever the search engine indexes a new website related to your particular search string.
Other paid services such as Reputation.com, help you filter the web for photos, audio clips, videos and text with much more details.

Tip 4 : Respond to misleading content & always avoid bullies
Now that you are regularly updated about the new content being published about your company, you might come across inaccurate information which is shared unintentionally, in such a case you can contact the author and request him to correct the information or remove the blog post altogether.
However, if you find deliberately untruthful or belligerent content about you or your company, you should not confront the author. Often, online bullies only want to create drama, and attempts to bury their attacks are a great way to draw more attention to the issue.

Tip 5: Promote positive content and listen to consumer feedback
Burry the negative content published by online bullies with a host of new useful content which your users might like, activate the blog on your website and talk to your customers, encouraging consumer interaction with the brand & collect customer feedback.
share new content on social networks on regular basis and see your likes and shares grow. if there is already positive content about your business online, promote it on your website and through your social media channels.
These were some of the tips we thought we could share with our readers, for more information visit our Online Reputation Management & Full Service Web marketing  pages.
